KUKERI

ISSUE 6

Hello, World!

Cepanka by Arske and Erase, Sofia, Bulgaria

The festival of Kukeri, Bulgaria dates back to the Tracian times (c. 10th century BC to 1st century AD) to ward off evils spirits by performing traditional rituals. Around New Year or before, the men of the town are usually costumed elaborately with decorated wooden masks of animals sometimes double faced with large bells attached to the belt.

In wiki, the description states  ‘Kukeri is a divinity personifying fecundity’ – the word fecundity .. .what a fabulous word, as well as meaning abundance of fertility it also means an abundance of ideas.

Issue 6 was created from travels in Bulgaria in July 2022.
